I bought a 3D r/w, expecting to use it with my old Rose machine, and found that it had no software, and that I should have bought the software first, then added the hardware to it. I don't know what, if any, difference there is between the 3D and 4D reader/writers, but have you installed the r/w with the software? I ask because I have had problems.
